At that time, there was danger of foreign invasion or attack. In such a situation, Prithvi Narayan Shah understood the pitiable condition of our motherland and he started a campaign for unification. Dear friend

Dilasha

I got your letter last Sunday evening. I am well here by the grace of god. I hope you are also well there. Since you requested me to write the condition of Nepal before King Prithvi Narayan Shah unified it. I am going to give you a short description about the condition of Nepal before unification. King Prithvi Narayan Shah, the king of Gorkha, took steps to unite Nepal. Today Nepal is unified, independent and a sovereign country, but before the unification, Nepal was divided into small kingdoms. There were 22 states in Karnali region which were known as ‘Baise Rajya’ in Nepali. Likewise, there were another powerful state named 24 states in Gandaki region which were called ‘Chaubise Rajya in Nepali. Kathmandu valley was also divided into three states Malla kingdoms, Kantipur, Patan and Bhadagaun. There were three more states in eastern part of Nepal, Makawanpur, Bijayapur and Chaudandi which were known as Sen kingdoms.

Those of states fought among them. They didn’t have deep relationship with each other. Due to frequent wars and internal conflicts, they were getting weaker and weaker day by day. Those states were struggling for the power. They didn’t have the feeling of cooperation and mutual understanding among them. There was a lack of brotherhood, patriotism and support. The British East India Company from the southern side were trying to enter into Nepal and capture Nepal. But, King Prithvi Narayan Shah understood the real fact of British ruler. King Prithvi Narayan Shah started and made his unification campaign successful by convincing the people of his state.

Okay, I want to stop writing. This much for today. Next time, I will you give you detail information about the unification with date if you like to know the information of history of Nepal.

Your loving friend

Bimala
